Meta Launches Avatars Store With Digital Clothes on Facebook and Instagram

Meta’s recent metaverse push continues with the launch of a new “Avatars Store” on Facebook and Instagram, which will enable users to buy digital clothes.

Meta wants to dominate the metaverse in the future following its recent rebranding.

Still, its latest announcement was relatively low-key as it quietly unveiled a new clothing store for avatars.

This is not a new concept as users on Microsoft’s Xbox gaming systems have been able to add clothing to avatars for years.

But Meta is giving the feature its own unique twist by bringing in clothing products from a number of big brands.

Among the designer names users will be able to style their avatar with include Balenciaga, Prada and Thom Browne.

There is a mix of smart and casual products too, with suits, hoodies and even a motocross outfit set to adorn the shopping aisle on Meta’s platform.

Digital clothing is something that Meta wants to expand, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg noting that more branded products would be added to the store in the coming months.

He added: “Digital goods will be an important way to express yourself in the metaverse and a big driver of the creative economy.”

It is no surprise then that luxury fashion houses have been working with tech companies to launch branded digital garments in games and on online platforms.

That trend has seen Balenciaga skins added to the popular battle royale game Fortnite, and a Gucci Town released for the creative platform Roblox.

Meta did not provide an official launch date for the Avatar Store but it did confirm that it will arrive “soon” on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.
