DOJ Considers Breaking Up Google Monopoly

A week after a US judge ruled that Google acted illegally to monopolise its position in the online search market, the Department of Justice is now reportedly considering breaking up the tech giant. A report in the New York Times claims that Google’s core products and services, including Android, Chrome, and AdWords, could be sold or divested.

LinkedIn Now Lets You Modify Scheduled Posts

A major quality-of-life improvement for social media managers has been rolled out on LinkedIn. Instead of having to delete scheduled posts due to pesky typos or image changes, users can now click a new “edit post” function to make quick adjustments. Previously, it was possible to reschedule the timing of a post, but not its content.

Google AI Overviews Arrive in the UK

Google’s new AI-powered search engine experience has launched in the UK. AI Overviews (AIOs) expanded to six new countries this week, with India, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil also gaining access for the first time. Google is also testing a new links and citations section on desktop and mobile to help users click through to “relevant web pages” directly from AIOs.

TikTok Offers Cash Incentives to Attract New Users

TikTok is addressing its growth challenges by offering users in the US cash incentives to “invite new creators”. The short-form video app is giving away a $100 Amazon gift card or a $300 coupon for each successful invitation. However, there’s a major caveat: TikTok only wants YouTubers with 10k+ followers or Instagram account holders with 100k+ followers. The move follows numerous reports that the platform’s once meteoric rise in active users has stalled.

Google Trends Gets New Insights for Search Terms

Topic and keyword research on Google Trends has become more insightful and relevant. The tool has added more details for search terms, including total search volume, how long they have been trending, and a complete breakdown with news and articles. On Thursday (15 August), ‘Molly Mae’ was the top trend in the UK with 500k+ searches following the news that former Love Islander and social influencer Molly Mae Hague had split from Tommy Fury.

Google says a “cutting-edge trend forecasting engine” powers the upgraded ‘Trending Now’ section. Google added: “It detects 10 times as many emerging trends as before and refreshes every 10 minutes on average, so you see the latest upward search swings right as they take off. You can even compare multiple trends and easily export their data for a closer look.”

Olympic-Themed Videos Generate 575m Likes on TikTok

TikTok’s growth may have plateaued, but it was the go-to platform for Olympic athletes and sports fans during the Paris 2024 Olympics. Gold medal gymnast Simone Biles and silver medal diver Tom Daley were both very active on TikTok during the Games, but it was little-known Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen who emerged as the breakout social star with his regular reviews of food in the athletes’ village. In total, there were around 575 million likes for Olympic-themed videos during the two-week event.
